ANTITUBERCULAR TREATMENTS

While there has been a fall in the number of TB cases in England in the past three years, the country still has the highest number of cases in Western Europe.
The Pharmaceutical Journal recently reported that the incidence of tuberculosis in certain parts of London is higher than in countries such as Rwanda, Iraq and Algeria. Bedaquiline and Delamanid, two new drugs for treatment of tuberculosis, have recently become available and dm+d has also included an entry for para-aminosalicylic acid, a mainstay of treatment in the mid to late 20th century.
A new Tag has been created to enable Trusts to monitor and compare their use of antituberculosis drugs within Define and Refine. The Tag is “Abx Antituberculosis” and includes all systemic formulations of drugs in Chapter 5.1.9 of the BNF and/or under ATC code J04A.
