HPAS Key Points

HPAS Key Features:

There are 8 major functions of the Hospital Prescribing Analysis System: ( refers to an available intranet output – reducing the need for paper reports and rapidly disseminating the information)

1. Budget management. Allocation and reporting on budget activity at ward and directorate level.

2. Clinical data generation.   View of cost and volume distributions of drugs at ward level. Standard review of high volume and spend items and also usage of formulary and usage and volume of antibiotics.

3. Controlled drug and abusable drug monitoring  Supports the responsible officer for Controlled Drug monitoring within the hospital

4. Bespoke reporting of therapeutic areas.  The system is fully flexible allowing the user to generate reports giving detailed analysis of ward prescribing. The data also generates Defined Daily Dose (DDD) information to review therapeutic groups.

5. Identification of high cost / financial risk / clinical risk areas of prescribing.  Examples of the risk areas included are: Controlled drug monitoring, NICE drugs usage, Non-tariff drugs for recharge, specialist drugs and shared care drugs to assist in budget management.

6. Individual drug cost or usage tracking.  Monitoring of drug usage over time to show changes in usage or cost at directorate or ward level. This is useful in reviewing prescribing trends including purchase costs of drugs or identifying diversion of medication.

7. Comparison statistics  The system allows a DDD data extract to be collated and redistributed to all participating hospitals to show comparison in prescribing patterns. This allows clinical pharmacists the ability to compare their hospital prescribing practice against other users of the system.

8. Data maintenance and update interface [Administrator function].  A data maintenance facility is included in the software for an administrator to maintain the data structures and to add new data to the system at the end of month to ensure the data is rapidly up to date.
